A 35-year-old man, wanted for a brutal sexual assault case in Augusta, was taken into custody on Monday by authorities. He faces charges of rape, aggravated sodomy, false imprisonment, first-degree burglary, and aggravated sexual battery, as per jail records.

Early Sunday morning, Richmond County deputies were summoned to Doctors Hospital in Augusta following a reported sexual assault. According to the incident report, the 25-year-old female victim stated that she had met the man through a dating app on January 4th and had dinner with him on Saturday night. The man allegedly gave her money for a hotel room at Scottish Inn on Gordon Highway and the pair engaged in sexual activity for around 30 minutes.

According to the victim's account, the suspect had left the room to get more condoms, returning around half an hour later and introducing himself as the man's cousin. The victim declined when the suspect asked for a hug and then started kissing her neck. She managed to escape and texted her sister. The suspect then took her phone and sexually assaulted her.

The victim drove herself to Doctors Hospital after the attack.

County records reveal that the suspect is a convicted felon who has served time for multiple drug-related felonies. In September 2022, he was arrested for illegally possessing a firearm. He was out on bond at the time of the alleged sexual assault. You never know who you will meet and it's important to be cautious and keep your safety in mind. Here are some safety tips to follow when meeting your dating app date for the first time.

  1. Choose a public place: Always meet in a public place where there are plenty of people around. This could be a busy coffee shop, a restaurant or a park. This will give you a chance to see your date in person and will also reduce the risk of anything untoward happening.

  2. Let someone know: Always tell a trusted friend or family member about the date and where you will be going. Give them a description of your date, their name and their phone number if possible. This way, if anything goes wrong, someone will know where you are and who you're with.

  3. Drive yourself: If possible, drive yourself to the date location. This gives you the freedom to leave whenever you want and not have to rely on your date to get you home.

  4. Be cautious with personal information: Be careful not to reveal too much personal information about yourself such as your address or workplace. It's important to protect your privacy and keep yourself safe.

  5. Trust your instincts: If at any point during the date you feel uncomfortable or uneasy, it's important to trust your instincts. If you don't feel safe, leave and go somewhere where you do feel safe.
