Tinder-Arranged Robbery Foiled by Berkeley Police Who Used Same App to Catch Them

BERKELEY - Four individuals, including two adults and two teenagers, were apprehended by police on Monday for allegedly robbing an apartment of a UC Berkeley student through a dating app. Incredibly, the same app was utilized by investigators to catch the suspects.

According to the police, a 19-year-old man and woman from Oakland, a 17-year-old girl from Stockton, and a 16-year-old boy from an undisclosed city were all suspected of participating in the home invasion robbery that took place on Sunday around 1 AM in the 2300 block of Prospect Street.

As per court documents, the student had arranged to meet the 19-year-old woman through the dating app Tinder at his home. When she arrived with the 17-year-old girl, the three met in front of the student's apartment. Berkeley police Officer Byron White stated that the 19-year-old entered the apartment with the student, while the two teenagers and the other suspect broke in and robbed the student at gunpoint, holding him down in the process.

The suspects made away with $4,100 in cash and electronics. The student declined medical attention after the incident.

According to the police, a search using the suspect's phone number revealed that it was linked to an escort service account with her picture attached. The woman's name and photo were also found to be associated with a Cashapp account through which she was paid. White explained that the investigators used the Tinder app to track down the suspect and arranged a date in the 200 block of Marina Boulevard on Monday. The officers arrived around 3:45 AM and found a four-door sedan with the suspects inside.

The police then stopped the vehicle and ordered the suspects out at gunpoint. White reported that the officers found stolen property, a BB gun, and a loaded handgun inside the car.
